Software development relies on unit tests and staging environments. For an endurance performance application, the ultimate integration test happens on the course.
In this field log, I tested the early readiness predictions of Ferrokinetic against the actual physical stress of a Spartan Race.
Key Learnings from the Course
- Grip Fatigue Correlation: Standard HRV doesn’t account for extreme localized muscle fatigue (heavy bucket carries, rope climbs, spear throw penalties).
- Elevated Heart Rate Spikes: Obstacle penalties (burpees) cause sharp anaerobic spikes that alter recovery time significantly more than steady-state running.
- Pre-Race Sleep Deprivation: Cognitive stress leading up to race day has a measurable impact on power output during the final 3km of the race.
Product Iterations Triggered
Following this race, several key adjustments were made to the Ferrokinetic telemetry pipeline:
- Weighted penalty metrics for grip-heavy obstacles
- Adaptive recovery curves based on sleep debt
- Enhanced Polar AccessLink telemetry polling during post-race recovery window
